5 Costly Mistakes to Avoid When Buying an Outdoor Programmable LED Sign
Investing in an outdoor programmable LED sign is one of the most effective ways to boost visibility for your church, school, or business. However, because it’s a significant financial investment, a single misstep can leave you with an expensive, underperforming asset.
As an independent sign broker, we see the good, the bad, and the ugly of the sign industry. To ensure you get the highest ROI possible, avoid these five critical mistakes when buying your digital display.
1. Choosing the Wrong Pixel Pitch
Pixel pitch—the distance between the centers of two adjacent LEDs—determines your sign’s resolution. A smaller pixel pitch means higher resolution, but it also means a higher price tag.
-
The Mistake: Buying a higher-resolution sign when your viewers are driving past at 60 mph from 200 feet away (where a 10mm or 16mm sign would look identical and cost thousands less).
-
The Fix: Match your pixel pitch to your viewing distance and traffic speed, not just what looks good on a showroom floor. 6mm-9mm are good standards to work with depending on the distance and speed of traffic.
- Real World Example: We recently installed an LED sign for JFCS of Suncoast in Sarasota, Florida. They had a lower definition sign installed originally but the are only 5 feet from traffic moving 40 mph. We replaced it with a 8mm sign and they have experienced record numbers of community members signing up for their services.
2. Overlooking Software Usability and Cloud Access
An LED sign is only as good as the software running it. If updating your message requires a computer tethered to a local network or clunky, outdated desktop software, your sign will quickly become an expensive paperweight.
-
The Mistake: Falling for cheap hardware while ignoring the software ecosystem.
-
The Fix: Demand web-based, cloud-scheduled software (like IlluminationEngine). Ensure anyone on your team can securely update messages from a phone or laptop, anywhere with an internet connection.
3. Buying Based Solely on the Lowest Price
Cheap LED signs flooding the market often cut corners on internal components like power supplies, light sensors, and cooling systems.
-
The Mistake: Choosing a bargain-basement manufacturer, only to suffer from frequent pixel outages, faded colors, and skyrocketing energy bills.
-
The Fix: Treat an LED sign as a 10-year asset. Look for energy-efficient engineering and premium diodes that maintain brightness over time.
- Specifics to look for in the American market: Find a manufacturer that is forthcoming with all specifications, especially diode manufacturer and model, power supply make and model, and the specific content creation system you will have to use (many are complex and difficult while others are much more effective).
4. Ignoring the Fine Print on Warranties and Labor
Many manufacturers boast “5-year warranties,” but a closer look at the contract reveals they only cover parts, not the labor to fix them.
-
The Mistake: Assuming you are fully covered, only to be slapped with a $250-450/hour bill from a local technician just to swap out a single faulty module.
-
The Fix: Look for factory-backed warranties that DO NOT include third-party underwritten labor insurance to protect your budget from unexpected maintenance fees. Underwriters are incentivized NOT to spend on solving your problem and will often be a hassle to obtain coverage in the end.
5. Getting Locked Into One Factory’s Ecosystem
Most sign companies are exclusive dealers for a single manufacturer. Naturally, they will tell you their specific brand is the perfect fit for your project, even if it isn’t.
-
The Mistake: Trusting a biased factory rep who is forced to push a square peg into a round hole.
-
The Fix: Work with an independent broker who compares options across multiple top-tier factories to find the exact engineering match for your specific location and budget.
